The good thing about Stockhausen is that he did it all. Not only was he further ahead than anyone else, he was also better than anyone else. Aus den Sieben Tagen is a big classic, yet rarely performed. “Classical” musicians despise it because a huge part involves improvisation, and improvisers do not consider it because it is “signed” music. What a regrettable mistake do all these people make. It is precisely during these few days when Stockhausen composed this collection, that he had placed the highest faith into musicians, and, through a metonymic extend, into humanity. At this peak point, the last piece of the book states “Play, you do not need me anymore, everything you will do from now on will be right and good.” Yet, the mistake will not be undone as “classical musicians” are too anxious to be abandoned by the composer, and improvisers cannot bear interference in their musical ideas.

Aus den Sieben Tagen is a collection of pieces to be improvised after the very concise and apparently metaphysical instructions of the Master. But far from delivering us a strange joke or an esoteric manifesto, Stockhausen explores in fifteen pieces the main questions of composition, improvisation, art, its transmission and its origin, the status of the artist, his way of life and thought, the stage, etc.

This CD presents our favourite versions of these pieces, which we have been playing on a regular basis for the past two years. Most of the recording took place during a concert where we performed the whole collection in April 2008 (from 2:30pm to 00:30pm) at the théâtre du Grütli in Geneva. The last track was recorded in the Lapin Vert (Lausanne), a year earlier, in a slightly different casting, during a concert, in which pieces were chosen (intuitively) by the audience.

Le Car de Thon : In August 2006 a new music ensemble was born in Geneva, Switzerland: the Car de Thon. But why should one build up a new ensemble when (too) many of them already exist? First of all because the Car de Thon mixes the qualities of many different ensembles, qualities of which the most significant is precisely the mixing itself. Secondly the Car de Thon has a very specific approach to art in general, and to the people receiving it in particular: the audience. This short article will try to give a quick outline of the Car de Thon’s main interests and ideas, and demonstrate how it has the nerves to call itself an “all audiences ensemble” when we only play so-called contemporary and experimental music and performing arts, which are for some reason believed to be elitist.

Schoenberg - String trio, op. 45

AGP150 features two recordings of Schoenberg's String Trio op. 45, which was one of his last works, completed in 1946.

The first recording is presented in both 16-bit and 24-bit files and is performed by the Los Angeles String Trio. It was produced and engineered by the estimable David Hancock, who did so much fine work for CRI Records, and released on Desmar Records (DSM 1020G) in 1978. It is a lovely, spacious recording, and the Los Angeles String Trio's performance is both tight and passionate, with delicous sul ponticello work. The folks at Desmar had the good sense to have Teldec press the record, so there's very little noise or tracking distortion. This is the recording through which I originally fell in love with this work.

The second recording is performed by the Trio à Cordes Francais, and was released as part of a 4LP set featuring chamber works by Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, on EMI Electrola (1C181 - 28368/71) circa 1970. This LP was also pressed in Germany and has very little noise or tracking distortion. The recording is clean and clear but with the slightly harder sound characteristic of many late 1960s recordings. The performance has nothing to be ashamed of, but is not quite as rich and passionate as the other.

This piece by Sylvano Bussotti is called FRAMMENTO only on this record and in corresponding performances. It is actually the piece VOIX DE FEMME from the PIECES DE CHAIR II (1958-59), an expanded cycle for piano, baritone and further instruments adjoining sporadically, occasionally gaining the dimension of a chamber orchestra. The original version of FRAMMENTO is for voice and orchestra rather than, as on this recording, voice and piano. The principle of the entire cycle is its non-economy which reaches possibly its extreme, at least in respect to its performance technique, when a female voice and an orchestra are being introduced solely for this single piece. In context it functions as an isolated fragment. When it is isolated from the context, its fragmentary character is no longer perceivable, and it becomes a fragment (FRAMMENTO) all the more. Equally fragmentary is the representation for voice and piano. The piano adaptation was written by the composer himself, who thereby thought to establish the piano arrangement as an autonomous compositional genre. The fragment again consists of fragments, and the totality of the fragmental universe results in its negation, that is, totality. The compositional procedure remains that of a collage as well in respect to the musical material as to the far-fetched texts taken from various languages and books. If in the orchestral version the principle of instrumentation has been replaced, as it were, by the principle of instrumental dramaturgy, i.e. by a disposition of the instruments' entrances and exits, so does this correspond with the principle of correpetition in the piano version which has been developed to a principle of composition.

DIATRIBES:

Diatribes, a strongly libertarian ensemble, began its existence in a Geneva basement in Winter 2004. Their idea was to mix distinct various types and approach of the sounds, in order to develop a malleable musical mass. The instruments merge into the electronics treatments in a primary dance, where construction and deconstruction coexist, and envy and disgust unite. There are no limits in teh way of playing, where rhythms, melodies and noise meet sporadically, merging into each other until they are almost forgotten. Free jazz in its approach, acoustic and electronic in its execution, the trio is capable of exploring the minute like the intense.
Initialy a trio with Gaël Riondel on saxophone, diatribes became a polymorphous fromation, extending its spectrum with guest musicians such as the guitarist Christian Graf, the electroacoustician Nicolas Sordet, the pianists Jacques Demierre and Johann Bourquenez, the bassist Dragos Tara or the saxophonist Piero SK.

JACQUES DEMIERRE:

Jacques Demierre (1954), pianist, performer and composer, his musical and sound work develops itself in various directions : improvised music, contemporary music, sound poetry, sound installation. His compositions and sound realisations are concerned with the activity of listening and with sound space. He collaborates with many improvising musicians - Barre Philips, Urs Leimgruber, Thomas Lehn, Martial Solal, Radu Malfatti, Joëlle Léandre, Axel Dörner, Fritz hauser, Sainkho Namtchylak, Urs Blöchlinger, Irene Schweizer, Hans Koch, Isabelle Duthoit, Brandon Labelle, Jason Kahn, Butch Morris, Carlos Zingaro, Gunter Müller, Jaap Blonk, Barry Guy, Lucas Niggli, Sylvie Courvoisier, Hann Bennink, Rhodri Davis, Martin Schütz, Paul Lovens, Dorothea Schürch, Phil Minton, … He regularly plays solo piano concerts, and works with Vincent Barras in the field of performance and language art. “Jacques Demierre’s work exceeds the first degree articulation between music and poetry. Solo improvisation at the piano, work on the music of language and in the language: no need of confrontation. Each medium recognizes, assumes, reflects its limits and finds in this reflexion the instrument of its going beyond." (Ph.L.)

JOHANN BOURQUENEZ:

Johann Bourquenez was born in Besançon, France on January 11th 1976. He first studied violin at the conservatory of music between the ages of 5 and 10, and later graduated in piano with distinction. Following one year in classical harmony and musicology at the conservatory and two years of private lessons with pianist Jean-Yves Perron, Johann's interest in jazz was consuming. In 1997 he went to Toulouse, France and studied for two years at the "Music-Halle" jazz school with well-known French jazz pianist Denis Badault and American saxist Abdu Salim, amongst others. It was during this period that he began to play with several jazz bands including the NUDE jazz quartet and Thomas Gouband quintet. Moreover he became involved in various projects combining jazz and electronic music in groups such as, Interface, Ground Exp. and the Minimal Orchestra, which took him to various regions throughout France and Spain. His interest for electronic music led him to play not only the piano but also the electric piano Fender Rhodes, and various other electronic devices such as the analog synthetizer SH101. He also composed and produced music for several projects ranging from classical string quartets (Juan Chic Quartet, Zaragossa) to computer-based music and mix-media performances (entropie, I-Shot-Kaliayev, Keplerslaws). In 2004 Johann Bourquenez began to play with tenor saxist Eric Pailhé, under the name of Tlön 5. The band's first recording could be best described as an evolution in the bands style. Titled "The Fissback Voyage" it was the result of a series of improvised jazz and electronic concerts with various guests. Looking for a way to release this album, they decided not to follow the tradition of producing a CD but to distribute the music for free as an mp3 on the internet. This concept of distribution had been used a lot in the electronic music area, but not so much for jazz inspired productions. This led them to found their own netlabel, eDogm. "The Fissback Voyage" album and its mode of release proved successful and brought several specialized press reviews and interviews. The eDogm netlabel has also moved forward and released several other albums and compilations. Searching for new forms of expression, during summer 2005 the Tlön 5 duet turned into free improvisation concerts with no set list and no electronic devices; only a piano and saxophone assist them in expressing the intensity of the moment. Johann Bourquenez is currently residing in Geneva, Switzerland, and works on his post-jazz trio PLAISTOW with Cyil Bondi and Raphael Ortis.

These pieces are both related to the concept of Filtering. In the first, a sopranino saxophone improvisation was taped and then immediately afterwards ‘filtered’ through a second, separate, improvisation process using very different instruments along with the tape.
The second is the result of Barry Chabala radically reworking (with his laptop) a recording called ‘Almost Acoustic’ which I sent to him over the internet. This original recording was composed of nine overdubbed layers of Trumpet, Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Sopranino Saxophone, Percussion and Cymbal, Percussion and Cymbal and Toy Drum, Amplified Ukulele, and Keyboard respectively, but has been transformed into something entirely different by Barry’s laptop.

Gianni Lenoci followed the usual way he use from last three years: just small notated fragments as starting point to jump into improvisation. These small notated fragments are a kind of " prolific material". They can be used in several ways: combination, permutation, inversion and so forth, in the same way a sculptor manipulate his materials. Gianni showed to musicians the general gist of the composition and through the process of rehearsal and human relationship the group went to a kind of "structure" with sections, musical figures and gestures, signals and orchestration.

Hocus_Pocus Improvisers Orchestra:
The Hocus_Pocus Improvisers Orchestra explores the relationships between improvisation and musical writing in its various forms, including the use of graphic scores, traditional&alternative notations, game pieces and conduction. The ensemble plays music from the more radical fringes of the contemporary repertoire (Cage, Maderna,Bussotti, Stockhausen, Ferrari among others), as well as compositions by Gianni Lenoci,totally improvised music and free jazz.

Gianni Lenoci:
Piano Diploma at “St. Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome, Electronic Music Composition Diploma at "N. Piccinni" Conservatory in Bari. Improvised music studies with Mal Waldron and Paul Bley. Award by “Centre Acanthes” in Paris (France).
He is performer and composer (both acoustical and electronic) of notaded and improvised music. He played with: Massimo Urbani, Steve Lacy, Joelle Leandre, Steve Grossman, Harold Land, Bob Mover, Enrico Rava, Glenn Ferris,Eugenio Colombo, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Don Moye, Han Bennink, Antonello Salis, Carlo Actis Dato, David Gross, Paul Lovens, Sakis Papadimitriou, Georgia Sylleou, Jean-Jacques Avenel, John Betsch,Markus Stockhausen, Steve Potts, Carlos Zingaro, John Tchicai. Further more he give performances with poets,dancers and multimedia artists.
From 1988 He is teaching PERFORMANCE, IMPROVISATION & COMPOSITION in jazz and contemporary music classes at "Nino Rota" Conservatory in Monopoli (Italy). §- Acoustic Location and Sound Mirrors.

Before the advent of the aeroplane, acoustic location was applied to determining the presence and position of ships in fog.

Acoustic location was used from mid-WW1 to the early years of WW2 for the passive detection of aircraft by picking up the noise of the engines. It was rendered obsolete before and during WW2 by the introduction of radar, which was far more effective. Horns give both acoustic gain and directionality; the increased inter-horn spacing compared with human ears increases the observer's ability to localise the direction of a sound.

This album is the third release of Planete Sauvage built around the eponymous piece composed and performed by Usull "The strange mood of the dirty rocks". It's weird atmosphere reminds a lot of the frightening and disturbing openning of Ridley Scott's first "Alien" from witch it is partly inspired.

In the center, as a catalyst of the duo's wonderings and thoughts, the second piece of Usull, "Le spectacle du non-vivant" draws a parallel line with Kassiel's "La metamorphose des Krolls", from the previous album, composed nearly at the same period, exploring the same themes, and as a coincidence, using our beloved Guy Debord's extract from "La societe du spectacle". The opening piece, Kassiel's "Image d'un objet recompose" visits the relations between body and memory in a visual journey, a strange chiaroscuro or a scanned picture.

For the rest, it is the continuity, wild and mad, of Shemty and Biculah, final chords of their fates, witch will lead, eventually, to their unescapable undoings and losses.

But Kontarsky's recording was the first of this set of Klavierstucke and so has historical interest. Eve Risser has her musical roots in chamber music as a flutist and pianist. While residing in Alsace, France, she merged in to the contemporary and jazz/improvised music world.
Eve’s multifaceted musical creativity has been heard in various settings, festivals and groups throughout Europe, USA and Japan. She has had the opportunity to play with interesting improvisers in a broad range of contexts, such as in theatre, dance, poetry, children, solo performances, contemporary and live soundtracks to films. Eve's actual musical researches are based on the exploration of paradoxal piano sounds, on the experimentation of the different delays existing between the improviser and the sound finality, and how all these techniques are scribed in a musical meaning.
Currently Eve´s musical life is based out of Paris where she is involved in organizing contemporary and improvised music live performances and a festival.
Eve has had the possibility to play with great musicians such as Joel Grip, Yuko Oshima, Caroline Kraabel, Nina de Heney, Michael Zerang, David Stackenäs, Christine Senhaoui, Sofia Jernberg, Shelly Blake, Charlie Haden, Tim Murphy, Niklas Barnö, Adolfo Kaplan, Yan Marezs, Anete Schluenz, Joris Rühl, Seiko Fukushima, John Berndt, Michael Formanek, Gary Thomas, Jaap Blonk, Katt Hernandez, Ron Anderson, Devin Grey, John Hollenbeck, Theo Bleckman, Susan Alcorn, Armand Angster to name a few.

Rafal Mazur, Graduate of State Secondary School of Music in Krakow, in the cello class of Krzysztof Okon. Fascinated with jazz and bass guitar, he studied privately with a KraKow bass player Marek Janicki. At present Rafal Mazur plays acoustic bass guitars custom built to his own specifications by guitar maker Jerzy Wysocki. He has developed an advanced and individual approach to his instrument—and to improvisation in general—in which sonority, extended technic and gesture combine effortlessly in performance. Mazur’s uncompromising musical standards are matched by the sophistication of his wit and demeanor on- and offstage.
He has taken an important role in Kraków to support young artists and improvised art and has performed jazz and improvised music in clubs and festivals across Poland and in much of Europe (recently in China) . He is a founder of “Improvising Artists” - an informal association grouping musicians - improvisers, who promote and create improvised music. Rafal Mazur focuses on cooperation with Keir Neuringer, project “PROCESS_Laboratory of Intuition” and “Ensemble 56” Hunagrain-Polish contemporary jazz band. A few weeks back a show by a reformed Teenage Jesus & The Jerks launched with a bang Thurston Moore and Byron Coley's new book 'No Wave:Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980'. But this was a far more genteel affair at the McNally Robinson bookstore in Soho where Thurston was joined by David Browne, who himself has a new book out - a biography of Sonic Youth - 'Goodbye 20th Century', for a talk/signing session. Thurston genially fielded questions from David and the crowd on his experiences upon moving to NYC in the late 70s, his (at first reluctant) adoption of the No Wave scene, and the foundation of Sonic Youth. The whole piece runs 1hr 12mins.

Michal Dymny was born in Cracow in 1985. He was studying piano and percussion in Primary and Secondary State School of Music in Krakow, but his main musical activity is focused on electric guitar. As a guitarist he has developed an individual style full of sonority and preparations that come into being during improvisation. From 2005 he takes part in lots of events that are dedicated to free improvised music and contemporary art. At presence he is a member of “PROCESS_Laboratory of Intuition”, which is a band/institution (founded by Rafal Mazur) concentrated practically and theoretically on aspects of collective free improvisation and intuitive music. He participates in projects organized by “Improvising Artists” group.

DIATRIBES:
Diatribes, a strongly libertarian ensemble, began its existence in a Geneva basement in Winter 2004. Their idea was to mix three distinct types of sound (electronic, wind and percussion), in order to develop a malleable musical mass. The saxophone and drums merge into each other in a primary dance, where construction and deconstruction coexist, and envy and disgust unite. There are no limits to their sound, where rhythms, melodies and noise meet sporadically, merging into each other until they are almost forgotten. Free jazz in its approach, acoustic and electronic in its execution, the trio is capable of exploring the minute like the intense. Their relationship with the public is intimate and profound. Dreams and fears become noise and silence...

Initialy a trio with Gaël Riondel on saxophone, diatribes became a polymorphous fromation, extending its spectrum to other musicians such as the guitarist Christian Graf, the electroacoustician Nicolas Sordet, the pianists Jacques Demierre and Johann Bourquenez,

DRAGOS TARA:
Dragos Tara was born in 1976 in Bucarest, but has lived in Switzerland since the age of 5. He studied double bass at the conseratory in Montreux and Lausanne, From to 2002 to 2007, he studied composition and electroacoustics at the conservatory in Geneva.
After discovering many different musics (rock, jazz, classical, balkan music) he he is now active in many groups of improvised music : Hibiki (Laurent Bruttin, cl./CH, Kim Myhr., gt/ Norw.), a duo with Sébastien Roux (FR/electronic.), l'Ensemble Silence (live music for silent movies), KikU*2 4tet.
Dragos has realized different projects: Performance for musiciens, dancers et electronics in the former jails of Vevey (2005) ; Jeu : duel musical pour double-quartet (2004), solo concerts and a doublebass quartet.
He has also written music for various ensembles: Ensemble Vortex, compagnie CH.AU, íllorkestra, Bolouris 5tet, Ostermundigen symphonic Orchestra .

PIERO SK:
Piero SK is a personage born approximately 10 years ago, on a table of writing. He is an autodidact and work in theatre, writing and music. He collaborated in particular with Monsieur Jean, Noël Akchoté, Saadet Türköz, Jacques Demierre, Jacques Roman, Wilbert de Joode, Obaké, AbSTRAL compost, la Gale, Vernacular, Jeudi, Rue du Nord. Its biography is variable, its room is populated by shadows.

«Rhythms that bleed. Rhythms that rust and fall apart. Rhythms that fracture your perception of time. D'incise's decompositional approach is charged with an electricity that turns actual objects into distorted images. At times, you will find your neck's vertebrae moving back and forth to keep a time only existant in your mind. In the collaborative nature of "Les Restes du Festin", we can hear micro-cuts from various improvised music recordings of Johann Bourquenez (piano), Christian Graf (guitare), Christophe Berthet (saxophones), Gaël Riondel (saxophones), Cyril Bondi (drums) and d'incise (piano and percusions). In addition, we can hear the talented intervention of Lena, Bluermutt, Hopen, Ibakusha, and Monsieur Connard.

Here, electronic thoughts are translated into numerous acoustic dances to the point of loosing distinction. Dancing thoughts of electronic motion. A grand piano that stands up as anthropomorphic figure to interact and dialogue with the player. Frequencies that tickle the tympanic membrane in order to descend through the eustachian tube reverberating eternally. Binary codes that materialize into percussive instruments; number ones as drumsticks, and zeros as bass drums.
Dusty pieces of metal falling through a waterfall of sound waves until they reach the depths of an ocean of noise. Water ripples become multicolored threads that float around a beam of light. Mercury plugs that melt when plugged into amplifiers. Unidentified Flying Objects that become cymbals and give a message about phenomenal spaces. Static hairs follicles that abandon the skin to encounter the vibrations coming from the speakers. These are some of the visions I receive when listening to this sonic constructions. Joel Grip: swedish bassplayer, festival organiser, label producer, etc. Moving about in the improvised / experimental / creative music field he tours worldwide and has worked with, a.o., Eve Risser, Yoshida Tatsuya, Joe McPhee, Mats Gustafsson, Sam Rivers and Michael Zerang.

Christian Munthe: swedish free improviser concentrating on the sonar possibilities offered by an acoustic guitar. Since the 1980's he has performed/recorded solo as well as with Günter Christmann, Anders Dahl, Mats Gustafsson, Paul Lovens, Phil Minton, Christine Sehnaoui, Roger Turner, a.o.

Tatsuya Nakatani: contemporary percussionist, originally from Osaka, Japan. He performs creative music around the world, and has created a totally unique sound which defies category or genre. He utilizes the drum set, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls and metal objects.

Abstract: The interview traces the background of Ligeti’s opera Le Grand Macabre (1977) through the whole of his career to a fundamental eschatological concern. It retraces its genesis and discloses sources of inspiration in literature and formal analogies to cinematography and the arts. Drawing a parallel with Three Pieces for Two Pianos (1976), it focuses on time neutralization, quotation techniques, the problems of synesthetics and acoustical illusion.

In April 1977, Ligeti finished the score to Le Grand Macabre, an opera in two acts and four scenes based on the play Ballade de Grand Macabre (1934) by Michel de Ghelderode. The work premiered at the Royal Opera of Stockholm, who had commissioned the work. After this, it had its German premiere, in the German language, at the State Opera of Hamburg, in October, 1978, and recently, the Italian premiere, in Italian, in Bologna.

A novel from the japaneese writter-scenarist Ryu Murakami gave the piece it's name, but its theme was inspired by David Cronenberg's subversive film Crash, eroticism and death allegory. Besides we can hear the bewitching voice of the beautiful Déborah Unger.

2-Nos Années Sauvages - Our Wild Years (Kassiel)
This is the french title of the movie Days Of Being Wild, from the chineese director Wong Kar Wai.The duo remembers his youth full of hopes, yet outraged and rebellious, related to their father's youth, enthusiasmes and desillusions ( the french student's revolt in May 1968, first man on the moon 1969 ... ).

"berliner" than anything else ), Cassiel is before all the angel of solitude, the one who cannot but look and listen.

6-Le Retour De Biculah Dans Sa Patrie (chapitre2) - The Return Of Biculah In His Land (part two) (Kassiel)
Second episode of Biculah's adventures, back on his journey in Berlin, our hero, quite a bit desillusioned will cross

This has given me full license to explore the intersections between solo saxophone music and poetic lyrics, so I was very pleased to have the chance to come to Antwerp and bring these experiments to fruition in a new environment. biography:
Arriving in NYC in 1995 at the age of 19, with male pattern baldness shaved in his head by his own hand, Andre Vida began terrorizing the Knitting Factory, The Cooler and subway platforms everywhere, with his unique brand of improvised saxophonic punkosity. In between performances with Anthony Braxton, The Tower Recordings, Susie Ibarra, Lil' JJ, Brandon Evans, Sonny Simmons, Tim Barnes, and Cecil Taylor, Vida began to notice that there was often a cab parked on the corner of Hudson and Canal with a coffin sticking out the back. One day, Vida decided to see what was inside. Was it the future of freejazz? The fate of instrumental improvisation to the exclusion of theatre? Was it a call for Vida to develop his singing voice? I wish I knew, for he seems to hold a kind of power over me and I believe it stems from what he learned there.

Eleven years later in Berlin, his highly regarded 'Every Tuesday night for the rest of your life' series at Wendel, has allowed him to hone his skills as tap dancer, saxophonist, blues singer, and monologuist with amazing guests from all reaches of the globe. Guests have included Ame Zek, Kevy Blechdom, Kim Hiorthoy, Clayton Thomas, Tony Buck, Jamie Lidell, Bill Youngman, Guido Hennebohl, Brendan Dougherty, the disgruntled mimes, and many more...

Mazen Kerbaj

§- Mazen Kerbaj was born in 1975 in Beirut and lived there since. His main activities are comics, painting and music. After a lot of works for different publishers and magazines, it is in March 2000 that he releases some of his more personal works in his Journal 1999 (a dairy in comics' format). He self-published eight other books and many short stories since.

It is also in 2000 that he plays for the first time in concert, in the Strike's pub in Beirut. This concert, a duo with Lebanese sax player Christine Sehnaoui, is probably the first improvised music concert in the Middle East.
In 2001, together with guitarist Sharif Sehnaoui , he creates the MILL association that curates since IRTIJAL an annual international festival for free music in Beirut as well as various concerts and events (IRTIJAL saw over the years some great improvisers like Fred Van Hove, Johannes Bauer, Lê Quan Ninh, Franz Hautzinger...).
In august 2002, together with Sharif Sehnaoui and double bass player Raed Yassine he recorded the album A published by La CD-Thèque, Beirut.
After meeting Franz Hautzinger by chance in Lebanon in February 2003, they played in duo in Beirut and in Paris and in trio with Japanese laptop player Taku Unami at the IRTIJAL 2003 festival. Then they were joined by Sharif Sehnaoui and Helge Hinteregger to form Oriental Space quartet that played in Nickelsdorf, Berlin, Vienna and Klagenfurt. A recording of this group is avilable on the Austrian label aRtonal, and Abu Tarek, a recording of the duo Hautzinger/Kerbaj is available on the Portugese label Creative Sources.

In 2005, Kerbaj releases 2 new albums on the Lebanese newly born label Al Maslakh (The Slaughterhouse), one in solo and the other with Rouba3i quartet.

Between 2000 and 2006, Mazen Kerbaj played in solo and various groups in a lot of venues in Lebanon, Syria, France, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, UK, and the USA.

Apeiron is a duo of contemporary improvised music – grand piano and acoustic bass guitar – founded in Krakow by Marzena Lis and Rafal Mazur. They are working together since 2005 playing improvised music and realizing graphic scores. Apeiron is e self-reliant duo but members are really interested in cooperation with other artists. They worked with Gilad Roth – saxophone, Rafal Drewniany – electronics, Tomek Choloniewski – drums and with Misha Feigin (concert at “Meeting of Improvisers” – Krakow 2007) - guitar. Apeiron working in “trans-idiomatic” aesthetic, it means that on the ground every available kinds of aesthetic artists create new configurations and new shapes and figures of sounds.

Poème symphonique was composed by György Ligeti in 1962. We are presenting this work this evening. The concert, which we went to record in Rome, was presented by an orchestra of 100 performers. This rebroadcast is a television premiere. At the end of the concert, we will offer a brief explanation, but first listen and watch. The concert begins in one minute.

Since its world premiere in the Netherlands in 1963, Poème symphonique for 100 metronomes has been very rarely performed in public. The complicated scenographic staging, the detailed preparation by hand, the need for around ten technicians to activate more or less simultaneously the 100 metronomes, makes the demand for performances limited. Thirty-two years after the premiere, the sculptor and installation artist Gilles Lacombe heard a recording of the work. Impressed, he decided to invent a machine able to perform the piece automatically. After six months, he set up this ingenious device. Ever since, Poème symphonique can be performed accurately, at any time, and in public. Please understand that at its world premiere in 1963, the concert was filmed by Dutch television. On that night, after the final tick-tock of the metronome, there was a heavy silence, followed by booing, screaming, and threats. The concert was never broadcast. (translation from ionarts)

Bechir Saade

§- Bechir Saade is a multi-instrumentalist musician active on mainstream as well as free improvisation music scenes. He has played and performed in numerous festivals, projects and venues with different musicians from jazz, to traditional Middle Eastern music.

Since Saade became active in freely improvised music he has played with musicians such as Wade Matthews, Ernesto Rodrigues, Martin Kuchen, David Stackenas, Michael Zerang and many others. In Lebanon, he regularly participates in the Irtijal festival (the annual free improvised music festival) and numerous other festivals and events throughout the year. He founded with six other Lebanese musician the first Lebanese ensemble of experimental music "Al Moukhtabar" that plays improvised as well as composed music.

Moukhtabar Ensemble – a formation that includes Sharif Sehnaoui, Christine Sehanoui, Mazen Kerbaj, Jassem Hindi, Charbel Haber, and Raed Yassine – already worked with, among others, Gene Coleman, Stephane Rives, Jason Kahn and is constantly inviting many international musicians interested to play with Lebanese musicians.
Bechir Saade is also interested in the musical heritage found in traditional Middle Eastern techniques of improvisation, which is underemphasized in his region. He seeks to establish a link between this heritage and the forms of development encountered in certain kinds of contemporary music.

Saade offers workshops on traditional improvisatory techniques of the nay.
